Decorated floats and larger-than-life balloons wound their way through New York City Thursday as part of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The big picture: This year's parade marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the parade, which first brought festive Thanksgiving cheer to the city in 1924.
However, this year is only the 98th edition of the event, which did not take place in 1942, 1943, and 1944 during World War II, according to Macy's.
This year, viewers can expect to see 17 character balloons, 22 floats, and 11 marching bands, the retailer said. There will also be performances by Broadway show casts, rapper T-Pain, and The Temptations.
In 2023, the parade was one of the very few non-sporting events to crack the 100 most watched broadcasts.
Raleigh's Christmas Parade, presented by Shop Local Raleigh, returns for its 80th year this Saturday, kicking off the holiday season in the Triangle.
Why it matters: A devastating tragedy two years ago—in which 11-year-old Hailey Brooks, who was dancing in the parade, was fatally hit by a 20-year-old towing a float in a truck—will still loom large over this year's event, though the city and parade organisers have sought to move forward with care.
